Year 6

Welcome to Autumn 2!  This half term, Year 6 will continue to shine as we dive into new topics, exciting projects, and creative challenges. We’re looking forward to seeing our pupils show curiosity, teamwork, and resilience as they learn and grow together!

 English

This term in English, we are exploring Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian — a powerful story set during World War II about friendship, resilience, and hope. Through this text, pupils will deepen their understanding of character development, emotion, and historical context. They will also refine their writing by focusing on empathy in storytelling, creating atmosphere through description, and using a range of sentence structures for impact.

By the end of the unit, pupils will produce thoughtful and expressive pieces inspired by the novel, showcasing their growing maturity and confidence as writers.

Guided Reading

This term in Guided Reading, pupils will be reading Clockwork by Philip Pullman — a dark and fascinating tale filled with suspense, mystery, and imagination. As we delve into this story, pupils will develop their inference and deduction skills, explore how tension and atmosphere are created, and discuss the author’s use of language to build mood and meaning. They will also make predictions, justify opinions with evidence, and engage in rich discussions about the story’s themes and messages.

Pupils should be reading at home everyday. We have a range of books, in the class and on Bug Club, that the pupils have access to. Please ensure that they are recording their reading in their reading journals. We will also be asking pupils to record interesting phrases and sentences from their reading that can be used in their writing.

They will also refine their skills in using the four operations with whole numbers and apply these methods to solve multi-step problems. In addition, pupils will begin exploring fractions — comparing, ordering, and calculating with them to deepen their reasoning and problem-solving skills. Daily Fluent in Five sessions will continue to support the development of accuracy, confidence, and fluency in arithmetic.
