Reception

Reception Autumn 2

Literacy

This term’s core text is We're Going on a Bear Hunt, which will serve as the foundation for a diverse range of interactive and exploratory activities. Through close engagement with the text, children will develop a nuanced understanding of the story’s language, rhythmic structure, and vivid descriptive elements. In addition to this, children will gain insights into character motivation and narrative progression. Additionally, the text will inspire students to craft their own imaginative bear hunt journeys, allowing them to apply storytelling techniques, explore creative thinking, and deepen their comprehension of the story’s themes and structure.

Math's:

This term, our focus will be on the exploration of key mathematical concepts, including the composition of numbers up to 5, 2D shapes, and positional language. These foundational topics will be brought to life through engaging, hands-on activities and dynamic, interactive lessons. Children will have the opportunity to explore time through practical exercises, investigate the relationships between numbers within 5, and deepen their understanding of shapes and spatial relationships. By actively participating in these activities, students will develop a solid grasp of these concepts, enhancing both their mathematical reasoning and their ability to apply these ideas in real-world contexts.

Phonics:

We are beginning Phase 3 of our phonics program. The children will learn new sounds and read ELS (Essential Letters and Sounds) weekly allocated books. They will also take home sound-related reading books. Please ensure these books are looked after and returned to school daily. We encourage you to read with your child and provide feedback in their reading diary.

Science

This term in Science, our Reception children will be learning all about the four seasons of the year — spring, summer, autumn, and winter!

We’ll explore how each season looks and feels, what happens to the weather and how we can spot the changes around us. The children will enjoy exciting activities such as observing the weather, creating seasonal crafts, and talking about how we dress for different seasons.

PE:

PE sessions will be held every Thursday. The children will engage in activities that develop essential team play skills, ball skills, and physical coordination. Please ensure your child wears an appropriate PE kit on Thursdays.
Please ensure children have spare clothes in their bags if they have an accident.

General message:

Please ensure that your children complete their homework over the weekend so they can be collected by Thursday, as well as reading with a parent for ten minutes each day. Also, please ensure you bring spare clothes for your children in case of an accident.
