 Nursery Spring 2

What we are learning this term.

Literacy

This term in Nursery, we are diving into the beautiful underwater world of The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. This story helps children explore important themes such as friendship, sharing, kindness, feelings, and empathy. We will be reading and retelling ‘The Rainbow Fish’ in a variety of ways, using story props and puppets to bring the characters to life, learning new vocabulary related to the ocean, and encouraging children to discuss how the characters feel. Over the coming weeks, our classroom will be full of colours and creativity as children make shiny rainbow fish using collage materials and foil. They will take part in activities such as exploring colour mixing to create beautiful scales for our own unique fish.

Maths

Over the coming weeks, the children will be exploring repeating patterns, counting, capacity, and 2D and 3D shapes in Maths. The children will learn to recognise, name, and explore common 2D shapes (such as circles, squares, and triangles) and 3D shapes (such as cubes, spheres, and cylinders) through hands-on play and construction activities. The children will create, copy and continue simple patterns using colours, objects, sounds and actions. We will investigate full, empty, and half-full amounts and compare different amounts using water and containers during practical activities.

Phonics

In phonics, we will continue learning phase 2 sounds. These sounds are foundational for building words and reading fluency.

Science

In science, we will be exploring a variety of sounds through play, imagination, and creativity. There will be activities for listening carefully, recognising sounds in the environment and exploring loud and quiet noises. Children will also create their own sounds by using everyday objects.

PE

Our Nursery children will take part in Athletics during PE lessons. The children will develop their fundamental movement skills through fun, engaging activities. These will include running, jumping, balancing, throwing, and simple team games. Our focus will be on building coordination, confidence, listening skills, and enjoying physical activity in a supportive environment.
